Parallelism
parallelism adds emphasis, organization, and pacing to the writing
Anaphora
repetition of a word, phrase, or clause at the beginning of two or more sentences or clauses in a row
Chiasmus
when the same words are used twice in succession, but the second time, the order of the words is reversed.
(fair is foul and foul is fair)
Antithesis
Two opposite ideas with parallel structure
“it was the best of times, it was the worst of times”
Zuegma (Syllepis)
When a words modifies two words in different ways.
Parody
exaggerated imitation of a serious work for humorous purposes.
Polysyndeton
List of items separated by conjuctions. Used to slow down the pace of the writing or to add an authoritative tone.
Pun
When a word that has two or more meanings is used in a humoorous way. “I was stirred by his cooking lesson”1
