Aphorism
A terse statement which expresses a general truth or moral principle. A memorable summation of the author’s point.
Euphemism
A more agreeable or less offensive subsititute for generally unpleasent words or concepts. Sometimes for political correctness. Sometimes used for humor.
Conceit
An extended metaphor
Metonymy
Replacing an actual word/ide with a related word/concept. “strained”
Synesthesia
A description involving a crossing of the sense. “deafened by his brightly colored clothing”
Invective
A long, emotionally violent, attack using strong, abusive language.z
Paradox
A seemingly contradictory statement which is actually true
Parallelism
places equal grammatical constructions near each other, or repeats identical grammatical patterns.
Chiasmus
When the same words are used twice in succession, but the second time, the order of thw words is reversed.
Antithesis
Two opposite/contrasting words/phrases/clauses/ideas with parallel structure.
Persona
The fictional mask or narrator that tells a story
Polysendeton
When a writer creates a list of items which are all separated by conjuctions. Often used to slow down the pace of the writing or add an authoritative tone
Romanticism
Art/literature characterized by an idealistic, perhaps unrealistic view of people and the world, and an emphasis on nature.
