Anxiety/sedation/depression Flashcards
what is the process of BAGA transmission
insert photo
what is the effect of benzodiazepines on GABA transmission
increase frequency of channel opening
what is the effect of barbiturates on GABA transmission
increase duration of channel staying open
what are the main clinical uses of drugs targeting GABA
anaesthetics (barbiturates only) - thiopentone
anticonvulsants - diazepam, clonazepam, phenobarbital
anti-spastics - diazepam
what is the monoamine theory of depression
depression is caused by a functional deficit of central monoamine transmission
NA and 5HT follow the levels of MA
(mania is an excess of MA)
how do tricyclic antidepressants work
monoamine reuptake inhibitor
inhibits NA and 5-HT reuptake too
has sedation as side effect
how do monoamine oxidase inhibitors work
inhibit monoamine oxidase which is responsible for breaking done monoamine
therefore increases stores of 5HT and NA
how do selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors work
inhibit reuptake of 5-HT
fewer bad side effects therefore safer in OD however SSRIs are less effective in severe depression
prozac
how does lithium work
mood stabilising but not anti-depressive
