Analgesia and anaesthesia Flashcards
what are the types of opioid receptors
morphine
heroin
codeine (prodrug)
what is the mechanism of opiates
they are depressants
cause hyperpolarisation bu increasing K ions and decreasing the inward current of Ca. This decreases adenylate cyclase activity
how do local anaesthetics work
they are weak bases which work from inside the axon
the bind to the Na channel and block it. This reduces action potentials and therefore prevents the pain signal
how do general anaesthetics work
reduce neuronal excitability and alter synaptic function by targeting the GABAergic system
what is desirable in the blood:gas coefficient
a low coefficient - does not dissolve well in blood but more of it can cross the BBB
