Antiviral Pharm Flashcards
MOA of acyclovir
interferes with viral nucleic acid synthesis
prevents virus from binding to cells so virus cannot get into cells –> preventing viral replication
stimulates the body’s immune system to kill the virus
what is acyclovir commonly used for
herpes
adverse effects of acyclovir
GI distress, renal impairment, seizures, ITP, tissue necrosis (IV)
nursing considerations of acyclovir
NOT a cure, treats symptoms and frequency of outbreaks
may require multiple treatments
what is oseltamivir used for
prophylaxis and to treat flu (onset of 48 hr)
immunocompromised after known exposure to influenza A and B
MOA of oseltamivir
inhibit neuraminidases in influenza viruses
SE of oseltamivir
n/v
seizures
renal impairment
what is ganciclovir used for
cytomegalovirus (CMV)
MOA of ganciclovir
inhibits viral DNA polymerases resulting in chain termination
Adverse effects of ganciclovir
Black box: hematologic toxicity, fertility impairment, fetal toxicity, carcinogenesis
nursing considerations of ganciclovir
do not give with imipenem/cilastatin –> seizure potential
watch kidneys if given with other nephrotoxic drugs
