Reversible Nephrotoxicity
What do you need to know before administering Acyclovir?
PMH of dehydration, renal impairment, taking nephrotoxicdrugs
How is Acyclovir administered?
Oral - with or without food
IV - Slow infusion
Topical - apply the drug with a rubber glove
What should you emphasize to a patient who is taking Acyclovir?
This is not a cure and the importance of preventing spread with sexual contact.
What drug do you use to treat influenza?
Neuraminidase Inhibitor: Oseltamivir (Tamiflu)
What is Oseltaminir (Tamiflu) used for?
Adults and children 1 year or OLDER who have contracted influenza A or B
How is Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) given?
PO no later than 2 days after the onset of symptoms
What is the MOA of Oseltamivir (Tamiflu)?
Inhibits the viral enzyme neuraminidase thereby preventing the virus from exiting the cell wall
What is a contraindication of Oseltamivir?
Children less than 1 year old
What is a precaution of Oseltamivir?
Lactation
