Anterior Lower Leg Muscles Flashcards
What is the innervation of the anterior lower leg muscles?
Deep fibular nerve (L4-L5)
Name the muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg
Tibialis anterior Extensor digitorum longus Extensor hallucis longus Fibularis tertius
What is the action of the anterior lower leg muscles?
Dorsiflex and invert the foot
Attachments of the tibialis anterior?
Lateral surface of the tibia to the medial cuneiform and base of metatarsal I
Action of the tibialis anterior?
Dorsiflexion and inversion of the foot
Attachments of the extensor digitorum longus?
Lateral condyle of tibia and medial surface of fibula. Tendon splits into four and inserts on each toe.
Actions of the digitoum longus?
Extension of the lateral four toes Dorsiflexion of the foot
Attachments of the fibularis tertius?
Most inferior part of the extensor digitorum longus Tendon attaches to metatarsal V
Actions of the fibularis tertius?
Eversion Dorsiflexion of the foot
What does damage to common fibular nerve result in?
Footdrop
How does footdrop occur?
Damage to the common fibular nerve paralyses anterior muscles of the lower leg Get unopposed plantarflexion of the posterior lower leg muscles.
What is the gait of someone with footdrop? Why?
Eversion flick To prevent the affected limb from dragging along the ground.
