Anesthesia Flashcards
Dalton’s law
total pressure = sum of partial pressures
Henry’s law
solubility of gas/vapor in liquid before equilibrium is reached is determined by the partial pressure
How are vapor anesthetics taken out of the body?
breathed out
Drugs that are more soluble in the blood require more/less drug to achieve the desired effect
more
How do inhalation anesthetics work mechanistically?
alter membrane fluidity
Minimum alveolar concentration
analogous to ED50, should use 1.3-1.5x this amount
Drugs are are more lipid soluble are more/less potent
more (cross membrane)
Second gas effect
rapid uptake of first anesthetic from alevoli into blood creates a negative pressure in alveoli, increasing potency of second anesthetic
What are the problems with halogenated anesthetics?
damage to kidneys, liver, and reproductive organs
Why does the OR need to be so well ventilated?
to keep surgical team safe from gasses
Injectable anesthetics are used
for induction
Halothane, isoflurane, desflurane, sevoflurane, N2O
