Androgens Flashcards
1
Q
What are the major sources of circulating androgens?
A
- testes
2. adrenal glands
2
Q
How is hormonal regulation of androgen synthesis mediated through series of biochemical reactions?
A
- Hypothalamus
- Pituary gland
- adrenal glands
- testes
3
Q
How is testosterone produced?
A
- Testes derived from adrenal glands / C19 steroids = androstenedione
4
Q
What reaction occurs in the prostate gland?
A
Testosterone ————> dihydrotestosterone(DHT)
5-alpha reductase
DHT active ligand –> bind + activitate = androgen receptor (AR)
5
Q
What happens in early stage PCa?
A
- atypical tumour cell proliferation - promoted by DHT-induced activation of AR signaling axis
- Blockage + reduction circulating androgens - induce tumour regression
- Hormonal manuiplations to reduce circulating androgens
