Anatomy Dissection 2 Flashcards
Where does the gluteal region lie?
Between the back and the posterior thigh and posterior to the pelvis
What bounds the gluteal region superiorly and inferiorly?
Superiorly - iliac crest
Inferiorly - Gluteal folds
Where does the intergluteal cleft lie?
In between the buttocks
What three muscles are in the gluteal regions superficial layer?
Gluteus maximus
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimus
What is the most superficial and largest of the gluteal muscles?
Gluteus maximus
What are the five attachments of the gluteus maximus?
Iliac crest Sacrum Sacrotuberous ligament Coccyx proximally Iliotibial tract distally
Where do some fibres of gluteus maximus attach distally?
Gluteal tuberosity of femur
What is the most powerful extensor of hip (getting up off chair/climbing stairs)?
Gluteus maximus
Where do gluteus medius and minimus both attach to?
External/posterior/gluteal aspect of the ileum and the anterolateral aspect of the greater trochanter of femur
What muscles abduct and medially rotate the thigh at hip joint?
Gluteus medius and minimus
What is the nerve supply to the gluteus medius and minimus?
Superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Damage to what muscles or nerves results in Trendelenburg test positive
Gluteus medius or minimus
Superior gluteal nerve
What nerve contains inferior gluteal artery, vein and nerve and supplies gluteus maximus, it is also located deep to gluteus maximus?
Inferior gluteal neurovascular bundle
What nerve contains superior gluteal artery, vein and nerve and supplies gluteus medius and minimus, it also lcoated deep to gluteus medius?
Superior gluteal neruovascular bundle
What group of muscles are the lateral rotators of the hip (including piriformis)?
Deep gluteal muscles
What do deep gluteal muscle layers run between?
Sacrum, iliium and ischial spine and tuberosity medially and mainly the greater trochanter of femur laterly.
What is a thickening of the deep fascia of the thigh, known as the fascia lata?
Iliotibial tract
What does the iliotibial tract run from?
ASIS to the lateral aspect of the lateral tibial condyle at the Gerdy tubercle
What is the tensor fascia latae?
Muscular part of fascia lata, enclosed within the proximal portion of tract
What are the sciatic nerve roots commonly affected by?
Lumbar slipped discs giving symptoms in the foot (sciatica)
What nerves branches descend through the popliteal fosa and posterior and lateral compartments of hte leg into the foot?
Sciatic nerve
What nerve emerges into the gluteal region and supplies the muscles, skin and fascia of much of the perineum?
Pudendal nerve (S2-4)
What nerve forms in hte sacral plexus, emerges into the middle of gluteal region and supplies skin over posterior aspect of thigh?
Posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh (S1-3)
In lumbar puncture - where is CSF taken from?
Subarachnoid space surrounding spinal cord
What plane is level of iliac crests - for lumbar puncture?
L3/4`
In adults where does spinal cord end?
L1/2
