Anatomy Dissection 11 Flashcards
What structure of the anterior forearm thickens distally, firstly as the palmar carpal ligament at the aspect of wrist joint then, distally and deeper as the flexor retinaculum?
Antebrachial (deep fascia) of anterior forearm
What does the flexor retinaculum attach to laterally and medially?
Laterally - scaphoid/trapezoid
Medially - pisiform and hamate
What prevents bowstringing of the tendons during flexion, which would reduce muscle efficiency?
Flexor retinaculum
What distal tendon fuses with and strengthens the flexor retinaculum?
Palmaris longus
What is the carpal tunnel a combination of?
Carpal bones posteriorly and flexor retinaculum anteriorly
What is the contents of the carpal tunnel?
Long tendons of forearm flexor muscles (FDS, FDP and FPL) and the median nerve
In carpal tunnel syndrome what branch of the median nerve is given off proximally to the tunnel and travels superficially to skin of palm therefore sparing sensation to central palm?
Palmar cutaneous branch of median nerve
Each finger has four neurovascular bundles supplying it - name them
- Medial palmar
- Lateral palmar
- Medial dorsal
- Lateral dorsal
What technique is commonly used to anaesthetise a finger
Ring block technique
What nerve supplies medial part of palm, little finger and medial half of ring finger?
Ulnar nerve
What nerve supplies central/lateral palm, medial half of ring finger, middle & index finger and thumb?
Median nerve
What nerve supplies skin over the base of the thumb?
Radial nerve
What structures are continuous with the longitudinal digital bands of the palmar aponeurosis?
Fibrous digital sheaths
What do fibrous digital sheaths attqach to both sides of?
Phalanges
What is suggested with tenderness in the floor of the anatomical snuff box following trauma?
Scaphoid fracture
