Anatomy 1.2 Flashcards
What is the anatomical position?
Head, eyes and toes directed anteriorly
Upper limbs by the sides with the palms facing anteriorly
Lower limbs close together with feet parallel and the toes directed anteriorly
All the planes
Look at picture on page 4 of textbook
Inferomedial
Nearer to the feet and closer to the median plane (anterior parts of the ribs)
Superolateral
Nearer to the head and farther from median plane
Distal
Farther from the trunk (point of origin)
Proximal
Nearer the point of origin (trunk)
Dorsal hand
Posterior hand (dorsum)
Sole (plantar surface)
Inferior aspect or bottom of feet
Superior (cranial)
Nearer to head (head superior to stomach)
Inferior (caudal)
Nearer to feet (stomach is inferior to heart)
Posterior/dorsal
Nearer to back (heal is posterior to toes)
Anterior/ventral
Nearer to front (toes anterior to the heel)
Medial
Nearer to medial plane (pinky is on medial side of hand)
Lateral
Farther from median plane (thumb is on lateral side of hand)
Palmar hand
Palm
Dorsal foot
Top of foot
Superficial
Nearer to surface (muscles are superficial to bones)
Intermediate
Between a superficial and a deep structure (muscle is intermediate between the skin and bone)
Deep
Farther from surface (bone to muscle)
Unilateral
Occurring on one side of body
Bilateral
Paired structures having right and left members
Ipsilateral
Occurring on same side of the body
Contralateral
Occurring on opposite side of the body
Abduction
Away from medial
Adduction
Toward medial
Pronation
Palm facing posterior
Supination
Palm facing anterior
Which plane runs from side to side (X axis)?
Coronal
Which plane runs up and down (y axis)?
Sagittal
Which plane runs front and back (z axis)?
Anteroposterior
How do planes and axes relate to movement?
Movements are described as occurring through planes and around perpendicular axes
What motions are associated with the Saggital plane?
Flexion and extension
What motions are associated with the coronal plane?
Abduction and adduction
What motions are associated with the transverse plane?
Medial/internal rotation and lateral/external rotation
How are movements in the coronal plane described in the spine?
Right/left lateral flexion
How are movements in the transverse plane described in the spine?
Right/left rotation
Eversion
Move sole of the foot away from median plane
Inversion
Move sole of the foot toward the median plane
Where is the axis of rotation in the Saggital plane?
Lateral to medial
What is the axis of rotation for the coronal plane?
Anterior to posterior
What is the axis of rotation for the transverse plane?
Superior to inferior
