anatomical planes Flashcards
Standard anatomical position
- Body erect (standing up)
- Head, eyes, toes direction forward
- Limbs at side of body
- Palms directed forward
R & L
Its the persons R or L whos anatomy you are discussing
What do we assume when describing the body
we always assume this is the standard position of the body so everyone know precisely what we mean
Median (1)
Vertical, front to back in midline
Coronal
Vertical, perpendicular to median
Transverse
Horizontal, parallel to floor, perpendicular to median, coronal
Sagittal
Vertical, parallel to median
Median (or midsagittal)
Splits body into left & right parts
coronal
Separates the body into Anterior & posterior parts
Horizontal (transverse)
Separates body into superior & inferior parts
Sagittal
Any plane parallel to median plane
Medial
Closer to median plane
Lateral
Further from median plane
Anterior (ventral)
Towards front of body
Posterior (dorsal)
Towards back of body
