How does amiodarone work?
Antiarrhythmic - slows the conduction rate and prolongs the refractory period of AV and SAN
What are the indications of amiodarone?
Atrial/ventricular fibrillation, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, ventricular tachycardia
What are the contraindications of amiodarone?
Severe conduction disturbances, thyroid dysfunction, acute porphyrias,
Not for pregnancy/breastfeeding
NAme some drug interactions of amiodarone
Potentiates warfarin so patients need wafarin dose altering, inhibits CYP450 so reduces clearance of: cyclosporin, digoxin, flecadine
Name some side effects of amiodarone
Arrhythmias, nausea, hyperthyroidism (Contains similar ingredient to thyroxine), hepatic disorders, respiratory disorders
