Altimetry Flashcards
What is Elevation?
Distance between object and sea level
What is the QFE and how is it useful?
QFE = HEIGHT
QFE (Query Field Elevation) is the amount of atmospheric pressure setting at aerodrome elevation. It can be used to measure the height of an aircraft
Height = distance from specified datum
What is QNH ?
QNH = ALTITUDE
QNH (Query Nautical Height) is the pressure at mean sea level.
It can used to find the ALTITUDE of an aircraft
How do you figure out Flight Level (FL)?
Use (ISA) Standard Pressure Setting (1013.2 hectopascals)
Every 27ft = 1hpc
When do you change from Altitude to Flight Level?
The Transition Layer is where a change happens to the Transition Level. Below the layer is know as Transition Altitude
Different in every country
Which pressure settings to use?
Take-Off: QNH or QFE of Aerodrome
Below Transition Altitude: QNH
Above Transition Layer: Standard Pressure setting (SPS) (1013.2)
On airways: SPS
