Allergy and Immunology Flashcards
Vaccines for Adults with HIV
- Vaccine
- Indications
Azithromycin in HIV prophylaxis
Used to protect against infection with Mycobacterium avium complex in patients with a CD4 count <50 cells/microliter.
Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole in HIV prophylaxis
Used as prophylaxis against toxoplasmosis and Pneumocystis pneumonia in patients with a CD4 count < 200 cells/microliter.
Hereditary angioedema
Rapid-onset edema of the face, acral extremities, genitals, trachea, and abdominal organs without urticaria
Deficiency or dysfunction in C1 inhibitor
Results in elevated C2b and bradykinin
Acquired angioedema
Patients >=30
Low C1q levels
Features of leukocyte adhesion deficiency
Humoral immunodeficiency syndromes
(Condition, B cell count, IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE)
- CD40 ligand syndrome (hyper-IgM syndrome)
- Common variable immunodeficiency
- Job syndrome (hyper-IgE syndrome)
- Selective IgA deficiency
- X-linked agammaglobulinemia
B lymphocytes = Total lymphocytes - T cell lymphocytes
X linked agammaglobulinemia
- Clinical manifestations
- Diagnosis
- Treatment
Contact dermatitis (Allergic versus Irritant)
- Pathophysiology
- Triggers
- Appearance
Herpetic whitlow
Due to inoculation of herpes simplex virus on broken skin
Palmoplantar psoriasis
Thickened erythematous plaques with fissuring on the palms and/or soles, often with scaling.
Tinea magnum
Superficial fungal infection of the hands
Selective IgA deficiency
- Epidemiology
- Clinical features
- Diagnosis
- Treatment
Patients should where medial alert bracelets and receive blood products that are washed of residual plasma form an IgA-deficient donor
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome
Presents in infancy with recurrent sinopulmonary infections, eczema, thrombocytopenia.
23-Valent versus 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine
23 Valent: induces a T-cell independent B cell response
13 Valent (conjugated to a protein antigen): Induces a T-cell dependent B cell response
