Common Cold
A viral infection and self limiting. Treatment includes lots of rest and lots of fluid. Vitamin C and eating a well balanced diet
Common cold other treatments include
Anti-histamines and decongestants
Anti-tussives
Codine supresses cough by
direct action in the madulla
Anti-tussives
Dampen cough reflex
Opioid (effective; serious cough conditions) or non-opioid – dextromethorphan (robotussin)
Non-opioid – benzonatate (Tessalon)
Suppresses the cough reflex by anesthetizing stretch receptors in the lungs

Common cold additional medications
Expectorants - increase bronchial secretions
