FIR is made up of
Flight information region
Made up of CTA, CTR, ATZ, Danger, restricted and prohibited areas
Difference between a zone and an area
An area extends from an alt/FL to an alt/FL
A zone always extends from the ground
UIR
Upper information region
Bottom of this is a VFR FL
CTA - limits and purpose
Control areas
Lower limit - not less than 200m (700ft) above ground or water
Upper - VFR FL
Purpose - contain IFR flights for which an ATC service is req
Controlled by the area control centre ACC
CTR
Ground to alt and FL - Upper limit - VFR FL
Provides ATC to arriving and departing controlled a/c
May inc 2 or more a/d close together
Extends - 5nm from the aprch direction of the r/y
Classes of airspace that are controlled
A to E
Uncontrolled = F and G
F - advisory
G - open FIR
Speed limits in classes of airspace
A,B and IFR C = n/a
C VFR and the rest = 250kts below 10,000
FIS
Flight information service
Provides collision alerts - req pilot to action them
Available on request or to know traffic
RNP is determined by
Communication, ATC and nav services
ATS routes consist of
Airways Upper air routes Sids Stars Low level helicopter routes
Designator of a route
A number 1-999 and RNP
Prefix of a route designator
U - upper air route
K - helicopter low level route
Suffix of a route designator
F - advisory route G - FIS route (class G0
Y - RNP route at/above FL200 - turns between 30* and 90* are within RNP tolerance or an arc at radius 22.5nm
Z - same as Y but at/above FL190 and with an arc radius 15nm
Max number of characters on a route designator
Should be kept to a max 5 but never exceed 6
