A
- vision worse at nighttime
- opacity in the eye
- blurred vision

- increased intraocular pressure (IOP)
- greater than 30 mmHG
- loss in peripheral vision
- headache/brow pain
- place supine

A
- central vision loss, not peripheral field
- age-related
- worsens if smokes

A
- for clients with cataracts
- often combined with an intraocular lens implant
- sound waves break up clouded lens
- then removed by suction

Phacoemulsification care
A
- teach how to use eye drops
- do not lie on the operative side
- eye patch while they are sleeping
- avoid bending at the waist, coughing, or vomiting

Hyphema
A
- ocular emergency
- blood in the anterior chamber (in the eye)
- elevate HOB to 30 degrees
- eye shield
- no aspirin or NSAIDs
- avoiding bending at waist, vomit, or coughing

- emergency
- loss of vision
- looks like curtains closing
- flashes of light

A
- facilitate drainage from the eardrum
- should be placed on the affected side to facilitate drainage via gravity

- causes farsightedness

Otitis media
A
- infection (bacteria) of middle ear = fever = acetaminophen
- redness/swelling/otalgia (ear pain)
- build up of fluid behind ear drum
- treat with antibiotics
- HIGHER RISK IN INFANTS
- b/c of narrow, short, horizontal Eustachian tubes
- if child is pulling ear place child on affected ear
