16
Q

what are the complications of AOM ?

A

mastoiditis
TM perforation
facial nerve paralysis
intracranial complications

17
Q

what are the investigations for AOM ?

A

swab for culture and sensitivity
CT scan of temporal bone if complications are suspected

18
Q

what is the medical treatment for AOM ?

A

rest, fluids
analgesics, antipyretics
antibiotics
nasal decongestants

19
Q

what is the surgical management for AOM ?

A

myringotomy

20
Q

what are the indications for a myringotomy ?

A

Bulging TM
failure of medical treatment within 48 hours
if TM already ruptured : if the perforation is very small to drain or too high

21
Q

what is the prognosis of AOM ?

A

either :
complete resolution with healing of TM
or
Chronicity of TM perforation: becomes mucosal CSOM which is also known as chronic otitis media

22
Q

what are the reed flags associated with AOM ?

A

facial nerve paralysis
mastoid swelling
headache and deterioration of general condition
