Aetiologies?
A
Peptic ulcer Gastritis Oesophagitis Duodenitis Varices NSAIDs Steroids Anti-coagulants Anti-thrombolytics

Pathology?
A
Erosion of the gut wall –> exposure of vessels –> bleed

Signs and Symptoms?
A
Haematemesis, melaena, dyspepsia
Shock, signs of liver disease, decreased urine output, decreased GCS, on causative drugs

Investigations and Findings?
A
Urgent endoscopy Test for H. pylori Chest X-ray ABG FBC Clotting

Management?
A
Treat shock first
PPI therapy pre surgery
Varice ligation, Cyanoacrylate injection, Balloon tamponade

Complications?
A
Recurrence is common
Death by hypovolaemic shock
