Active Transport: Oak National Academy Flashcards
1
Q
What is active transport?
A
Active transport moves substances from a low to a high concentration (against a concentration gradient), through paritally- permeable membrane. This requires energy from respiration.
2
Q
Does active transport require energy?
A
Active transport requires energy from respiration.
3
Q
What two things are needed for active transport to occur in plants?
A
- Energy is required to absorb substances against the concentration gradient.
- Carrier proteins in the cell membrane are required.
4
Q
What are the adaptations of the root hair cells for active transport to occur?
A
- They have a large surface area to absorb minerals.
- A lot of mitochondria, providing energy for active trasnport to occur.
5
Q
Give an example of active transport in humans.
A
- Absorb sugars (glucose) from lower concentration in gut into blood, which has higher sugar concentration.
- Sugar molecules needed for respiration.
cells of wall of small intestine will have mitochondria
6
Q
Why do plants require minerals and ions from the soil?
A
- They require it for growth.
