A9 - The nervous System Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system?
sense the environment and to effect an appropriate response
What nervous system supplies to cell body walls, responds to stimuli from the external environment and is voluntary?
somatic nervous system
what nervous system sense and responds to internal environment and is involuntary?.
autonomic nervous system
the parasympathetic nervous system produces what response?
rest and digest
What nervous system produces the fight or flight response?
sympathetic
What does the sympathetic response cause?
increased heart rate arterioles dilate or constrict skin makes hair stand up and produces sweat bronchioles dilate pupils dilate liver releases glucose
parasympathetic will do the opposite
Define the term homeostasis
balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic
what are extensions of neurons which increases the surface areas and allow nerves to communicate?
dendrites
What is a collection of nerve cell bodies?
ganglion
What do somatic sensory nerve fibres supply?
sensory innervation to cell walls
What supplies motor innervation to skeletal muscle?
somatic motor
What supplies special sensory fibres?
special sensory
What tells the CNS about pain from an organ?
Visceral afferent
What is a mixed nerve?
a nerve fibre that contains 2 or more functional modalities
What part of spinal nerves contain mixed (motor and sensory) nerves
- spinal nerve
- posterior ramus
- anterior ramus
