A12 - Deep Fascia of the Neck Flashcards
What is the outer layeor or the skin which is water proof and non-vascular?
epidermis
What is the dense connective tissue layer of the skin which is vascularised?
dermis
What are the two layers of fascia and their features?
superficial fascia- adipose tissue
deep fascia - tough connective tissue
What features do the deep layers of tubes within the deep fascia give?
- connect the superior mediastinum to the base of the skull
- infection is maintained in one tube as it is unavailable to spread horizontally
What does the superificial fascia contain?
sensory nerves
platysma
superficial veins
What is the anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves C2-4
cervical plexus
What is the cervical plexus sensory to?
skin of the neck, shoulder, corner of the face
What branches of the cervical plexus arise for C2 and C3?
great auricular
transverse cervical
What branch is supplied by C2 only?
lesser occipital
What fibres supply the supraclavicular branch?
C3, C4
What is the point in the neck where the cervical plexus goes deep, posterior to the middle of sternocleidomastoid’s posterior border?
nerve point
What is the muscle of facial expression that is located in the superfical fascia of the neck that is supplied by the cervival branch of CN VII?
platysma
What are the superficial veins of the neck?
external jugular - sit on top of strenocleidomastoid and can be seen on surface anatomy
anterior jugular - on teh middle of the chin
superficial jugular communicating veins - empties blood from the common facial
What are the three layers of deep cervical fascia?
investing
pre-tracheal
pre-vertebral
What is enclosed in the investing layer of deep cervical fascia?
sternocleidomastoid
trapezius
submandibular and parotid salivary glands
