A4 - Energy In The Body Flashcards
What is energy?
Property of objects which can be transferred to other objects or converted but cannot be created or destroyed
What are the 5 things energy used for?
- blood circulation
- muscular movement
- breathing
- cell production
- transmit nerve impulses
What does catabolism mean?
The type of pathway that releases energy and is used to break down large molecules into smaller ones
What is anabolism?
The type of pathway which requires energy and is used to build up large molecules from smaller ones
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration with air
Why do we need aerobic reparation?
Living things need energy to perform different tasks to survive
Where does aerobic respiration come from?
Glucose
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
In the mitochondria
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without air
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without air
Why do we need anaerobic respiration?
During exercise, your body cells may not have enough oxygen for aerobic respiration to take place so anaerobic respiration takes place instead.
Where does anaerobic respiration take place?
In the cytoplasm
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose —> lactic acid
What is metabolism?
The chemical reaction in the body cells that change food into energy to help it grow and function
