A1 - The 9 Cell Functions Flashcards
What is the function of the cell membrane?
- transports substances in and out of the cell
- separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment and unwanted substances
What is the function of the nucleus?
- The control centre of the cell
- controls all activities of the cell
- stores genetic information and DNA
What is the function of the ribosomes?
- These are responsible for making proteins
- help build and repair cells and body tissues e.g. hair, skin, muscle and bone
What is the function of the rough ER
It is important for protein synthesis to help the rest of the cells to function
What is the function of the smooth ER?
Produces fats and releases them into cytoplasm
What is the function of mitochondria?
- supplies the body with energy
- acts as a digestive system - takes nutrients and breaks them down
- when in need of energy mitochondria will reproduce by growing larger and dividing
- less energy = mitochondria dying
What is the function of the centrioles?
- These are essential for cell division
- mitosis is the process where the cell divides into two identical daughter cells
- mitosis helps for growth and repair of worn out cells
What is cell division?
The process of mitosis by which a cell divides into two identical daughter cells
What is the function of the lysosomes?
- These digest worn out parts of the cell
- destroy bacteria and foreign materials
What is the function of the golgi apparatus?
- repackage substances and transports it to other organelles
- produces lysosomes
What is an organelle?
An organelle is a tiny body inside a cell which carries out its own function for example the nucleus
