A - Stages of attachment Flashcards
what are the 4 stages of attachment
- asocial
- indiscriminate
- specific
- multiple
characteristics of the asocial stage
- age is a few weeks
- observable behaviours toward an inanimate object of humans
- babies show preference toward familiar people
- baby forms bonds with certain people and these form the basis of later attachments
characteristics of the indiscriminate
- age is 2-7 months
- display of more obvious and observable social behaviours
- show a clear preference to human behaviour rather than inanimate
- accept cuddles and comfort from anyone
- don’t show separation or stranger anxiety
characteristics of specific stage
- age is 7 months
- display of classic attachment to a particular person
- includes anxiety to strangers and separation anxiety
- they seem to make a primary attachment figure (65% of the time is the mother)
characteristics of multiple stage
- age is 1 year
- start to show secondary attachments after the primary attachment
- these attachments are with the people they spend the most time with
- 29% of babies make secondary attachment within a month of a primary attachment
who proposed these stages of attachment
Schaffer and Emerson
AO3: X what research was their results based of
60 working class Glaswegian infants
- cannot generalise findings to wider population
AO3: + the study has good external…
validity.
- observations were made by parents doing ordinary activities and reported it to the researcher - no changes in behaviour
AO3: + what type of design was the study
longitudinal - conducted over 18 month and 7 day period - accurately compare changes over time
AO3 X how does social desirability bias come into play
mothers are reporting the babies behaviours so may change what they actually do to be seen as a better mother
