A: Bones Flashcards
Epiphyseal plate
Growth plate during childhood.
Hyaline cartilage is present until growth stops. When bone fuses after growth has stopped, it is replaced by epiphyseal line.
Medullar/marrow cavity
hollow cavity in centre of bone. Contains yellow marrow.
Blood supply in bones?
Blood vessels enter nutrient foramen in diaphysis.
Periosteum
Periosteum is the lining outside of the bone, continuous with articular cartilage.
Periosteum is firmly attached to the bone via perforating fibres.
Endosteum
Endosteum is the lining within the bone.
Function of trabeculae?
Trabeculae are aligned along stress lines so bone can withstand it.
Osteoblast vs osteoclast?
Osteoblast = blood forming
Osteoclast = blood reabsorption
Intramembranous ossification?
Sheet-like connective tissue is replaced by bone tissue
Endochrondal ossification
Hyaline cartilage is replaced by bone tissue
Where does bone deposition happen
Periosteal + Endosteal surfaces
Stages of healing a fracture
- Hematoma forms
- Internal callus formed, made from fibrous tissue and cartilage
- Cartilage is replaced by bone (endochondral ossification)
- Trabeculae aligned to withstand stresses.
