9 Muscle (Metabolism) Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscle metabolism?
Direct phosphorylation (anaerobic)
Anaerobic glycolysis
Glycolysis
Which types of muscle metabolism are anaerobic and which are aerobic?
Anaerobic: direct phosphyrlation and anaerobic glycolysis
Aerobic: glycolysis
How long does each type of muscle metabolism last for?
Direct phosphorylation: 15 seconds
Anaerobic glycolysis: 60-90 seconds
Aerobic glycolysis: hours
What are the energy sources for each type of muscle metabolism?
Direct phosphorylation: creatine phosphate (CP) reacting with ADP
Anaerobic glycolysis: glucose
Aerobic glycolysis: glucose, pyruvic acid, free fatty acids, amino acids
What are the benefits of each type of muscle metabolism?
Direct phosphorylation and anaerobic glycolysis are fast (sprint power) but short lived
Aerobic glycolysis is the most efficient type of metabolism - extracts 32 ADP for each glucose molecule, compared to only 2 ADP in anaerobic glycolysis
How much ATP does each type of muscle metabolism produce?
Direct phosphorylation: 1 ATP molecule per CP
Anaerobic glycolysis: 2 ATP molecules per glucose molecule
Aerobic glycolysis: 32 ATP molecules per glucose molecule
What are the waste products for each type of muscle metabolism?
Direct phosphorylation: creatine
Anaerobic glycolysis: lactic acid
Aerobic glycolysis: carbon dioxide and water
