5 Body Tissues (Cartilage) Flashcards
What are the main cell types in cartilage?
immature cells: chondroblasts
mature cells: chondrocytes
what is the membrane surrounding cartilage called?
perichondrium
describe the blood supply and nerve supply to cartilage
there is no direct blood supply to cartilage (avascular) and it is not innervated
cartilage relies on diffusion from surrounding tissues to obtain nutrients
this means that cartilage heals very slowly
what are the 3 types of cartilage?
hyaline
fibrocartilage
elastic
describe the features of hyaline cartilage
main cell type: chondrocytes
ECM: firm ground substance with collagen fibres
located in articulating surfaces of synovial joints, embryonic skeleton and epiphyseal plates, nose and trachea
supports, cushions and resists compression
describe the features of fibrocartilage
main cell type: chondrocytes
ECM: firm ground substance with collagen fibres
located in IV discs, pubic symphysis, glenoid labrum, wrist
describe the features of elastic cartilage
main cell type: chondrocytes
ECM: firm ground substance with elastic fibres
ear and epiglottis
