32 Inflammation (Acute Inflammation) Flashcards
What are the two types of inflammatory mediators?
vasoactive (act on blood vessels)
chemotactic (act on cells)
what are the two stages of acute inflammation?
stage 1: vascular
stage 2: chemotactic
what are the 4 cell types involved in acute inflammation?
neutrophils (phagocytic) - ingest and kill microbes. type of white blood cell, produced in bone marrow
mast cells (secrete inflammatory mediators) - located in loose CT of skin
basophils (secrete inflammatory mediators) - located in blood
platelets (aggregate and release inflammatory substances)
what happens in the vascular phase of acute inflammation?
vasodilation:
dilation of blood vessels
increases blood flow to tissues
increased vascular permeability:
allows fluid to exit blood vessels into tissues easily, delivery of WBCs, nutrients and plasma proteins
which type of immune system is acute inflammation a part of?
innate immune system
