3 Body Tissues (Blood) Flashcards
What type of tissue is blood?
A type of connective tissue
What are the 3 main functions of blood?
the transport network for the body’s cardiovascular system - takes oxygen and nutrients to tissues, and removes waste products from tissue
messenger system: transport of hormones, signalling of tissue damage
immunological functions: circulation of leukocytes and detection of foreign material by antibodies
What are the 3 main types of blood cells and their function?
erythrocytes (red blood cells) - contain haemoglobin that facilitates oxygen transport
leukocytes (white blood cells) - part of the body’s immune system. remove old cells and cellular debris, and attack infectious agents
thrombocytes (platelets) - blood clotting
What is plasma?
a non living fluid matrix (mostly water)
what are the 5 types of blood vessels?
arteries: carry blood away from the heart
arterioles: smaller branches of arteries
capillaries: smallest blood vessels where diffusion takes place between capillary and surrounding tissue
venules: smaller branches of veins, collect blood from capillaries and drain into veins
veins: carry blood back towards the heart
