22 Nervous System (Brain Overview) Flashcards
What are the 4 main regions of the brain?
Cerebral hemispheres
Cerebellum
Diencephalon
Brainstem
What do the cerebral hemispheres include?
divided into left and right hemispheres.
contain 4 lobes: frontal parietal occipital temporal
what does the cerebellum include?
divided into left and right hemispheres
what does the diencephalon include?
thalamus
hypothalamus
epithalamus
what does the brainstem include?
midbrain
pond
medulla oblongata
What are the 4 layers surrounding the brain, and a description of their features?
Dura mater (external membrane). 2 layers of connective tissue. Continues into vertebral column as the spinal dura mater, and extends into the brain to form dural septa that limit excessive brain movement
Arachnoid mater (intermediate membrane)
Sub-arachnoid space: between arachnoid mater and pia mater. spider web like extensions of arachnoid mater branch across this space to anchor to the pia mater. Contains CSF
Pia mater (inner membrane) hugs the geography of the brain
What are the 4 ventricles of the brain?
2 lateral (one in each hemisphere)
third ventricle runs narrowly between the two lateral ventricles
fourth ventricle (in hindbrain) continuous with third ventricle superiorly and central canal of spinal cord inferiorly
