20 Nervous System (Overview) Flashcards
What are the two major divisions of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System (brain and spinal cord)
Peripheral Nervous System (carries information between CNS and body)
What are the two major divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System?
Sensory division
Motor division (divided into somatic and autonomic divisions)
What are the two major divisions of the motor system in the PNS?
The Somatic Nervous System (voluntary movements)
The Autonomic Nervous System (involuntary responses)
What are the two major divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System in the PNS?
Sympathetic division:
body systems during activity
fight / flight / freeze
supplies all organs and musculoskeletal system
Parasympathetic division: body during rest conserves energy housekeeping, restore and repair functions only supplies viscera
