9: Anti-Infective/Anti-Bacterial Drugs Flashcards
Bacteriocidal
A drug that reduces the number of bacteria by killing them directly
Antibiotic resistance
The ability of a bacterium to resist the effects of antibacterials
Bacteriostatic
A drug that reduces the number of bacteria by preventing them from dividing and growing rather than directly killing them
Drug generation
Stage of drug development in which later generations are change slightly to improve the effectiveness or means of administration
Infection
Invasion by microorganisms that disturb the normal environment and cause harm or disease
Nonpathogenic organisms
Bacteria or other organisms that do not over color cause infection, systemic disease, or tissue damage
Opportunistic organisms
Bacteria or other organisms that cause infection, systemic disease, or tissue damage only when the immune system is suppressed
Pathogenic organisms
Bacteria or other organisms that cause infection, systemic disease, and tissue damage
Spectrum of efficacy
A measure of how many different types of bacteria a drug can kill or prevent from growing
Susceptible organisms
Bacteria or other organisms that either can be killed by or have the reproduction reduced by an antibacterial drug
Virulence
The measure of how well bacteria can invade and spread despite a normal immune response
