27: Drugs For Cancer Treatment Flashcards
Benign tumor’s
Types of abnormal cell growth that are usually harmless
Apoptosis
Programmed cell death
Cancer
Abnormal cell growth that serves no useful purpose, is invasive, and without intervention would lead to death
Carcinogen
Any substance or event that can damage the DNA of a normal cell and cause cancer development
Cyclins
Proteins to promote cells to enter and complete subdivision
Cytotoxic effects
Cell damaging and cell killing Effects
Emetogenic
Substance that induces vomiting
Extravasation
Leakage of an irritating chemotherapy drug into the tissue surrounding the van used to infuse the drug
Hyperplasia
Tissue growth caused by an increased number of cells
Hypertrophy
Tissue growth caused by an increase in the size of each cell
Malignant transformation
The many step process by which a normal cell changes into a cancer cell
Metastasis
The spread of cancer cells to other body areas, where they may grow into mature additional tissues and organs, often leading to death
Mitosis
Tissue growth by cell division, whereby one cell divides to form two new cells
Mucositis
Inflammation and ulcers in the mucous membrane, especially in the mouth
Neoplasia
New or continual growth not needed for normal development or replacement of dead and damaged tissue. It can be benign or cancerous.
