17: Drugs That Affect Blood Clotting Flashcards
Anticoagulant
Drug use to prevent clot formation or to prevent a clot that has already formed from getting bigger
Activated partial thromboplastin time
Plasma quaggy elation test developed for monitoring the effects of unfractioned heparin, and which plasma coagulation is activated in two steps
Antiplatelet drugs
A drug that prevents platelets from forming plugs that lead to clots
Blood clot
Blood that has been converted from a liquid to a solid state. It is also called a thrombus one occurring in a blood vessel or the heart.
Clotting cascade
The series of blood protein reactions I’m on clotting factors that cause blood to clot, also called the coagulation cascade
Clotting factor synthesis inhibitors
Drugs that decrease the production of clotting factors in the liver
Coagulation
The process by which a blood clot forms
Embolus
Something that travels through the bloodstream, lodges in the blood vessel, and blocks it’s flow
Fibrin
The protein form during normal blood clotting that is the essence of the clot
Hemorrhage
Excessive loss of blood from the blood vessels, profuse bleeding
International normalized ratio (INR)
A system established by the world health organization and the international committee on thrombosis and hemostasis for reporting the results of warfarin anticoagulation
Platelets
Irregular, disc shaped elements in the blood that help with blood clotting
Pulmonary embolism
An embolus that travels to The Lungs and can be life-threatening
Thrombin inhibitors
Drugs that interfere with blood clotting by blocking the action of thrombin, which converts fibrinogen to fibrin to form clots
Thrombolytic
The drug that Breaks down a clot that has already formed.
