Drug error
Any preventable event that may cause inappropriate drug use or patient Herm while the drug is in the control of the healthcare professional, the patient, or the consumer. A drug error may cause a patient to receive the wrong drug, the right drug in the wrong dose, the wrong route or at the wrong time
Buccal route
Application of a drug within the cheek or the cavity of the mouth
Enteral route
Delivery of drugs from the outside of the body to the inside of the body through the G.I. tract
Intradermal route
Injection of drugs with in or between the layers of the skin
Intramuscular route IM
Injection of drugs into a muscle
Intravenous route IV
Injection of drugs into a vein
Nasogastric tube
The tube inserted through the nostril into the stomach to deliver drugs
Onset of action
The length of time it takes for a drug to start working
Oral route
Administration of drugs by way of the mouth
Parenteral route
Movement of a drug from the outside of the body to the inside of the body by injection
Percutaneous route
Movement of a drug from the outside of the body to the inside of the body through the skin or mucous membranes
Percutaneous endoscopic Gastrostomy tube
A surgically implanted tube placed through the abdomen into the stomach

Given drugs by way of the mouth
PRN order
An order written to administer a drug to a patient as needed
Rectal route
Movement of a drug from outside of the body to the inside of the body through the rectum
