jump to conclusion
to guess the facts about a situation without having enough information
e.g.
Don’t jump to conclusions! Perhaps it was his daughter he was dancing with.
gesture
a movement that you make with your hands, your head or your face to show a particular meaning
e.g.
She finished what she had to say with a gesture of despair.
They communicated entirely by gesture.
look out for sth/sb
look and try to see or find sth/sb
e.g.
I’ll look out for you at the conference.
go red
become red in the face, often when you’re embarrassed
SYN: blush
e.g.
She went red as a beet.
blush
to become red in the face because you are embarrassed or ashamed
SYN: go red
e.g.
She blushed furiously at the memory of the conversation.
observant
good at noticing things around you
SYN: sharp-eyed
e.g.
How very observant of you!
He was acutely observant of the poverty around him.
make generalizations
Taking something specific and applying it more broadly is making a generalization. It’s a generalization to say all dogs chase squirrels. A generalization is taking one or a few facts and making a broader, more universal statement.
e.g.
A critical thinker tries to avoid generalizations unless there is enough evidence.
clenched fist
when you clench your hands, teeth, etc., or when they clench, you press them together tightly, usually showing that you are angry, determined or upset
e.g.
He clenched his fists in anger.
fold your arms
to put one of your arms over the other one and hold them against your body
e.g.
He stood watching her with his arms folded across his chest.
She folded her arms and stared at him.
cross your legs
to cross your arms/legs (= place one arm or leg over the other)
e.g.
She sat with her legs crossed.
defensive
behaving in a way that shows that you feel that people are criticizing you
e.g.
Don’t ask him about his plans—he just gets defensive.
signal
convey information or instructions by means of a gesture, action, or sound.
e.g.
“hold your fire until I signal”
flirt (with sb)
to behave towards somebody as if you find them sexually attractive, without seriously wanting to have a relationship with them
e.g.
He flirts outrageously with his female clients.
