the parts of a town or city that are furthest from the center
e.g.
They live on the outskirts of Paris.
stream
a vary small river
e.g.
There’s a shallow stream that runs along the bottom of my garden.
meadow
a field with wild grass and flowers
e.g.
Beyond my garden, there’s a lovely meadow.
infrequent
not happening often
syn: rare opp: frequent
e.g.
They would make infrequent visits to the house.
The bus service is infrequent here.
occasionally
sometimes, but not regularly and not often
In everyday English, people often say once in a while rather than occasionally:
e.g.
We only see each other very occasionally (=rarely).
isolated
feeling alone and unable to meet or speak to other people
e.g.
Young mothers often feel isolated.
nevertheless
in spite of a fact that you have just mentioned
syn: nonetheless
e.g.
What you said was true. It was, nevertheless, a little unkind.
mixed
it has 3 meanings:
1. different types of things: mixed farming (My uncle runs a mixed animal and arable farm)
2. good and bad qualities: I have mixed feelings about the farm.
3. consisting of different kinds of people: People of mixed race.
arable
connected with growing crops
e.g.
arable land (=land that is suitable for growing crops)
keep (animals)
to own and look after animals
e.g.
We keep chickens and a couple of pigs.
herd
a group of animals of one kind that live and feed together
e.g.
a herd of cattle
herd of elephants
dairy cows (or dairy cattle etc)
cows (or cattle) that are kept to produce milk rather than for their meat
e.g.
we keep a herd of 100 dairy cows.
cereal
a plant grown to produce grain, for example wheat, rice etc
e.g.
cereal crops
living
the way that you earn money or the money that you earn
e.g.
It’s not a great job, but it’s a living.
What do you do for a living? (=what do you do as a job?)
It’s hard to make a decent living as a musician.
