74C Flashcards
Iudicium sanctique placet sententia montis omnibus,
The judgment and the opinion of the sacred mountain pleased all,
arguitur tamen atque iniusta vocatur unius sermone Midae;
however the judgment was challenged by the voice of Midas alone having called it unjust.
nec Delius aures humanam stolidas patitur retinere figuram,
The Delmus did not allow stupid ears to remain in human form,
sed trahit in spatium villisque albentibus inplet
but extends them in length and fills the ears with white hair
instabilesque imas facit et dat posse moveri:
and made the bottom shaky and gave the ability to move.
cetera sunt hominis, partem damnatur in unam induiturque
The rest was of a man he was punished in one part and he wore
aures lente gradientis aselli.
The ears of a slowly advancing ass
ille quidem celare cupit turpique pudore tempora purpureis temptat relevare tiaris;
That one indeed desires to hide and tries to relieve himself from the shameful ugliness of the temples with a purple cap;
sed solitus longos ferro resecare capillos
but the servant who was having been accustomed to cut his long hair with a blade
viderat hoc famulus, qui cum nec prodere visum dedecus auderet,
had seen it, who since he did not dare to reveal the seen dishonor
cupiens efferre sub auras,
desiring to emit under the winds
nec posset reticere tamen, secedit humumque effodit et,
not able to keep silent however; withdrew and dug out the ground
domini quales adspexerit aures,
and what sort of his ears of his master he saw.
voce refert parva terraeque inmurmurat haustae indiciumque suae vocis tellure regesta obruit
In a tiny voice he muttered to the earth and buried evidence with thrown back earth
et scrobibus tacitus discedit opertis
and quiet and silent he departs from the covered trench.
