Tissue def.
A group of similar cells that carry out the same function
What is the difference between Simple tissues and Complex tissues
Simple: 1 cell type makes up the tissue
Complex: Morethan one cell type makes up the tissue
Name two animal tissues and give their function
Muscular tissue
A group of cells found in the muscles that allow for movement.
Nervous tissue
Group of cells called nerves (neurons) that are responsible for coordination and reaction
Name and give function of 2 plant tissues
Dermal tissue
Made up of epidermis. Protects the plant
Vascular tissue
Xylem: transports water and minerals
Phloem: transports food from leaves to the rest of the plant
How are tissues adapted for their function?
muscular, nervous, dermal, xylem
Muscular- can contract to allow movement
Nervous- has neurons which carry impulses and cause reaction
Dermal- thick cell walls
Xylem- hollow to transport water
Tissue culture def.
The growth of tissues in an artificial medium outside an organism.
Method of tissue culture
The tissue sample is removed from plant or animal
Grown in glassware under carefully controlled conditions
Result of tissue culture and process involved
Grows new tissue by mitosis and produce a cluster of identical offspring- a clone.
Conditions necessary for tissue growth
Oxygen
Free from competition
Optimum temperature
Sterile conditions
Uses of tissue culture
Transplant of skin, liver, pancreas Producing products such as.. Insulin Pregnancy testing kits Drug testing kits
What is micropropagation of plants? And it’s benefits
Produces exact copies of plants
Quickly produces mature plants
Doesn’t need pollinators or seeds
Produces plants that are disease resistant and virus free

A structure composed of a number of tissues that work together to carry out one or more functions
Examples of organs in plants and animals
Plants:
Root, stem, leaf, flower
Animal:
Heart, liver, skin, lung

Consists of a number of organs working together to carry out one or more functions
Eg. Digestive, Sketetal, Urinary, Nervous, Endocrine, Muscular, Reproductive
