1. Scientific Method Flashcards
Scientific method def.
A way to solve a problem or a question.
Steps of scientific process
- Make observations
- Formulate a hypothesis and predict what you expect to find out.
- Design a controlled experiment and carry it out.
- Collect and analyse results and data.
- Form a conclusion.
- Report and publish the results
- Develop theories and principles.
Hypothesis def.
An educated guess based on observations.
Eg. Eating vitamin C prevents colds
Data def
Information gathered from the experiment.
Theory def.
Hypothesis that has been supported by experiments
Principle def.
When theory has been shown to be true when fully tested over a long period of time
Name limitations of scientific method
The extent of basic knowledge. Ability to interpret the results. Emotional involvement of investigator. Time pressure Lack of equipment Ethical and legal reasons
Name principles of experimentation
- Safe experiment, common safety procedures in the lab.
- Must be a fair experiment.
- More than one sample being tested, use a large sample.
- Random selection, not the same ages/gender etc. - Replicate experiment
- Experiment must be published and repeated by a third party to achieve the same result. - Double blind testing
- Use a control..
Double blind testing def.
Neither the person being tested or the person carrying out the experiment knows who is receiving the treatment or who is receiving the placebo.
Control def.
A control is a standard against which results of an experiment can be compared.
One variable between the control and the experiment
Ethical Reasons
Whether the experiment is being carried out for the right reasons or not.
