15. Kingdoms of Life Flashcards
System of classification def.
This system divides the wide variety of living things into 5 kingdoms.
Name the 5 kingdoms
Animals Plants Monera Protista Fungi
Main features of Monera
Commonly known as bacteria. Prokaryotes Microscopic Unicellular organism- single cell to carry out all the characteristics of life. Asexual reproduction
Main features of Protista
Habitat- anywhere there is water. Eg. 1. Seaweed or Algae bloom. 2. Amoeba Unicellular and multicellular Eukaryotic
Main features of Fungi
Eg. Mushrooms, mould, yeast
Function: decomposers, they break down dead organic matter and returns nutrients to the soil.
Multicellular
Heterophic
Reproduces by spores
Structure:made up of threads called hyphae, carbohydrates called chitin.
Hyphae join together to form mycelium (fuzz or fluff)
Plant characteristics
Eukaryotic
Multicellular
Structure: Cell wall and large vacuole and chloroplasts
Photosynthesis (Autotrophic)
Asexual and sexual reproduction
Eg. Mosses, ferns and conifers, seed producing plants
Animal features
Eukaryotic Multicellular Structure: doesn't have a cell wall or chloroplasts. Heterotrophic Sexual reproduction
Heterotrophic def.
Cannot make its own food, feeds off other organisms
Autotrophic def.
Can make its own food.
Prokaryotic def.
Doesn’t have nucleus or other membrane bound organelles
Eukaryotic
Has a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles
