2. Characteristics Of Life Flashcards
Name 5 characteristics of life (SNORE)
Sensitivity Nutrition Organisation Reproduction Excretion
Sensitivity def.
The way in which living things respond to changes in their environment.
They develop adaptations, they change in response to long term changes in their environment, so they can survive.
Eg. Plants growing towards the light.
Nutrition def.
Process involving the making or receiving and utilisation of food from the environment.
Types of nutrition in animals and plants
Animals: feed on other organisms (heterotrophic)
Plants: make their own food by photosynthesis. (Autotrophic)
Organisation (Come To Our Shop)
All living things divided into Cells Tissues Organs Systems
Important for proper functioning.
Eg. Blood cells, blood tissue, heart, circulatory system.
Reproduction def.
The ability of an organism to produce new individuals of its own kind.
Asexual reproduction
Involves one parent
Eg. Bacteria and Protista
Sexual reproduction
Involves two parents and involves the production of a female and male gamete.
Excretion def. and importance
Is the elimination of waste products of metabolism.
All living things must get rid of waste material. It will become toxic to the organism if let accumulate.
Methods of excretion
In animals: urinary system, lungs, skin
In plants: the stomata(gaps in the leaves.) to remove wastes. Eg. Co2
Metabolism def. and importance
The sum of the chemical reactions that occur in the cells of living organisms.
Eg. Photosynthesis, respiration, digestion, excretion
Responsible for process of growth, repair, responsiveness, reproduction.
Types of metabolic reactions
- Anabolic reactions.
Use energy to join smaller molecules together to form larger molecules.
Eg. Photosynthesis - Catabolic reaction
Use energy to break down large molecules into smaller ones.
Eg. Respiration and digestion
(Tip! Anode and Cathode)
Continuity of life
The ability of an organism to exist from one generation to the next.
