§6.7 Flashcards
What do they mean when plants keep their seeds inside pods?
Not all flowers grow fleshy fruit around their seeds, so some keep their seeds inside pods
What happens when flower species have just one egg cell in each ovary?
This egg celld evelops into just one seed, for example peaches
And when the ovary has more than one egg cell?
They make several seeds for each flower, for example apples
A pollen grain contains a…
Male reproductive cell with a nucleus and hereditary material
What is fertilisation?
When the nucleus of the male reproductive cell fuses together with the nucleus of a female egg cell inside the ovary
How happens fertilisation?
Each pollen grain forms a pollen tube which grows down the style and into the ovary. Ass it grows it carries the nucleus with it. When it reaches the ovary the nucleus enters the ovule, it then blends with the nucleus of the egg cell. The fertilised egg cell becomes an embryo
What happens with the ovule after fertilisation?
It becomes the seed, carrying the embryo inside it
Why provide seeds a protective coat?
So the embryo of the plant can germinate when it finds a suitable piece of soil
What happens with the sepals and petals of a fertilised flower?
They will dry and shrivel
And what happens with a fertilised ovary?
It starts to swell and ripen
What is a ripened ovary called?
A fruit
