What are woody plants and how do they get their strength?
Plants that contain a lot of wood in their stems, wood gives the plant it‘s strength.
What are herbaceous plants and how do they get their strength?
Plants that have no wood, they get their strength from the pressure of water.
What is the petiole?
The stalk that attaches the leaf to the stem.
What are nodes?
The place where the petiole are attached to the stem.
What is an axillary bud?
The space between a leaf and the stem.
What is the internode?
The part of a stem between 2 nodes.
What is the terminal bud?
A bud at the end of the stem.
What is a leaf scar?
The place where the petioles were attached during growing season. (Under the terminal bud)
What does the xylem do in a plant?
Water enters the stem and pushes the water inside the xylem vessels up.
What does the phloem do in a plant?
Transporting glucose and other substances made by the plant to the parts that use the food.
Where are the xylem and phloem vessels organised?
In the vascular bundles.
What is the trunk?
The stem of a tree.
What is the cork?
Protects the stem against diseases and prevents water loss
What is the bark of a tree?
The cork and the phloem together
What is the cambium?
A layer of dividing cells, forms xylem and phloem
