§5.9 Flashcards
What are neurons?
The smalles parts of the nervous system, long thin cells
Where are neurons found?
In the brain, spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system
What does a neuron contain?
Cell body that contains nucleus and mitochondria and dendrites and axons
What is the function of dendrites?
To extend away from the cell body and receive nerve impulses from other neurons
What is the function of the axon?
It carries the nerve impulses to another neuron or to for example a muscle
What are sensory neurons?
A very long neuron with one end connected to sensory receptors in your toe and the other end to far away at a place near the spinal cord
What are interneurons?
Short neurons that work like switch boxes. They can receive signals from other neurons and they can transmit impulses to other neurons
What are motor neurons?
Can be very long neurons, they receive signals from the brain and spinal cord and sent the signals to effectors
