6.3 SG Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The process by which molecules or cells pass through a membrane that each have a different amount of a solute
Define passive diffusion
Diffusion that happens, hence the name, passively, cells are able to pass through the membrane without any help and it takes no energy for it to happen. High to low concentration
Define facilitated diffusion
Diffusion that requires a protein to be at the membrane to allow select cells or molecules to pass into the other side. High to low concentration, requires no energy to happen
Define osmosis
Process of diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane
Define hypertonic
Having the higher, or a lot of an amount of a solute
Define hypitonic
Having the lower, or less amount of a solute
Define isotonic
Both sides having equal amounts of solute in them
Define active transport
A process of diffusion in which cells or molecules are going through a “protein pump” that contrarily takes them from a place with low concentration to high. This one requires energy to happen.
Define endocytosis
The use of vacuoles as vehicles to bring IN a substance into a cell
Define exocytosis
The use of vacuoles as vehicles to bring OUT a substance from a cell
What is the importance of surface area to volume ratio?
It is important so that there is an even and quick process of exchange of resources and waste in the cell so that it may live
Which way does a solute diffuse across a membrane
From higher concentration to lower until both sides are isotonic
Which way will water diffuse across a membrane in osmosis
