4.2 Flashcards
Define metabolism
The chemical reactions that provide the life sustaining energy needed for life
Define anabolic
The making of larger molecules from smaller ones, like dehydration synthesis
Define Catabolic
The breaking down of larger molecules into smaller ones, such as hydrolysis
Define exergonic
The release of energy from a chemical reaction
Define Endergonic
The adding of energy from a chemical reaction
Define Hydrolysis
Breaking down a molecule’s chemical bonds using water
Define Synthesis
The combining of two or more substances such as substrates to make a product via a chemical reaction
How does an exergonic graph look like?
The reactants start out higher than the products and the reactants dwindle down
What does an endergonic reaction graph look like?
The reactants are at their lowest and they rise up along as making products
Is anabolic exergonic or endergonic?
Endergonic, it adds to the reaction, hence the name anabolic steroids
How can one describe when ATP loses phosphorus?
Exergonic, Catabolic, energy is released
How can one describe when ADP gains phosphorus?
Anabolic reaction, endergonic, energy is added
